At his small family home in rural Indiana, you might find musician Tom Frye toiling in his vegetable garden or teaching music to his kids. But carving out new songs and performing concerts has become his passion during the hours in between.
In addition to leading music within his local church, this prolific singer/songwriter has released four albums to date including 2006's Hope Is Alive, produced by Michael Aukofer, featuring Mitch McVicker (Rich Mullins) and legendary guitarist Phil Keaggy. Frye's newest project, the aptly named Songs of a Wilderness Traveler, reveals a dramatic period of change in his life.
"This album was written about the un-planning of my life and the resulting freedom found through a deeper level of intimacy with God," Frye explains. "It happened when I let go of my fears and stopped trying to protect my heart. Instead of working so hard to earn God's unconditional love, I learned how to accept it."
Co-produced by Aukofer and Nashville songwriter Jeremy Casella, and featuring Andrew Osenga (Caedmon's Call), and drummer Ken Lewis (Amy Grant, Emmylou Harris), Songs of a Wilderness Traveler effectively places times of struggle and loneliness alongside magnificent views of God's glory. "Run to You" chronicles a journey along a hardened stretch of desert that leaves behind a trail of doubt, while the violin-laden worship anthem, "Lord of Peace", comforts and quiets with reminders of grace.
Frye has unveiled his blend of worship/folk/rock in countless churches, various coffeehouses, even for kids at a juvenile correctional facility. Joining him on stage are longtime band mate, Todd Fiechter, as well as Frye's three children, Kaylyn, Maggie and Jonathon, who contribute on various instruments.
Since its April 2009 release, Songs of a Wilderness Traveler has received critical praise from numerous media outlets, as well as adds on several radio stations with its first single, "Rain Down".
Tom has opened for and performed with national artsits including Mitch McVicker, Jimmy Fortune (former Statler Brother), Dennis Swanburg, Jeremey Casella, eLi and Eric Peters. In addition to being a solo artist, Tom also performs regularly with his band, and his children "The Frye Kids".
