I was very heavily influenced by Pat Conroy, although my writing style is vastly different. After reading "The Lords of Discipline," I traipsed off to North Georgia College and State University to see what all this military college stuff was about. I graduated a changed person, mostly for the better. The result is "Higher Honor" a novel following four cadets through their senior year where they learn forgiveness and honor are tough choices to make, but God's grace is always sufficient, even in the most horrible of circumstances.
Speaking of Conroy -- my tagline came from his autobiography, "My Losing Season."
I have been drawn back into the darker side of faith. Until "Light at the Edge of Darkness" with my story "Fair Balance" was published, I'd forgotten how much I love spiritual thrillers. Christian horror? You bet!I have been involved with a wonderful, diverse group of writers who are now known as "The Lost Genre Guild" (www.lostgenreguild.com) where my love for horror was brought out of the closet. My story "Fair Balance" a denomic thriller (for lack of a better description) is in their anthology "Light at the Edge of Darkness."
A novel based on that short story is in progress, thanks to National Novel Writing Month. Look for it in 2009.
I'm part of a small, but growing group of writers who believe that horror, spiritual thrillers, and some darker style fantasies can be written to show God's grace, mercy and power. The darker side of faith is a wonderful backdrop for showing how bright His light truly is.
To pay the bills, I am a writer for the Calhoun Times, located in the beautiful rolling foothills of Northwest Georgia, where I cover government and law enforcement.

Fair Balance in "Light at the Edge of Darkness" (2007)
Celisa Cooper, a young Goth girl, wants to save her brother from an overly strict religious home. But is the blood that binds strong enough?
Life in a military academy is never easy and for women, it can be especially grueling. Even though for the most part, the males accept them as counterparts and teammates, some still see them as weak, or worse, a threat. That's the position cadet Cassidy Sanders finds herself in when she is named the brigade inspector general, responsible for ensuring there is no hazing in the school. Her job often puts her in direct conflict with cadet Chris Banton, commander of the most elite unit in the corps that is notorious for questionable training practices.
Their feud escalates until Chris, also dealing with his terminally ill father, snaps, brutally assaulting Cassidy. Scared and further convinced that the God of her youth has abandoned her, Cassidy builds a fortress around herself, forcing out those closest to her - Mandy, her roommate; Michael, Mandy's boyfriend; and Ryan, Michael's best friend and Cass's main confidante. But with Ryan and Michael also in Chris's unit, she's terrified of what their reaction might be. Will they turn on her the way she feels God did?
Can God show Cassidy that all things work together for good? And can Chris find God's grace and mercy even after his horrible crime? "Higher Honor" dares to go where few books go, deep into the heart of both victim and perpetrator and how one moment of violence changes not only their lives, but also those around them.
Look for it from The Writers Cafe Press in 2008!
P.S. My tagline above is a quote from Pat Conroy's "My Losing Season"

While historical romance isn't normally my thing, I found the story charming. Eden Barrett, the sanctimonious, altruistic governess finds herself in the home of the handsome Earl of Edmond, Colin Ashton, who sne...

In Higher Honor, I've addressed those affected by rape -- the victims, the perpatrators, and those who know them. This is the first of three inspired by the editorial "Rapists in the Ranks" by Jane Harman (D-Venice) who chairs the House Homeland Secu...
