The Independent Critic (2008)
The Independent Critic gives you more.
As a longtime peace activist and child advocate, I'm absolutely convinced that cinema has the power to change the world and to improve people's lives by challenging, educating, entertaining, companioning and inspiring all of us to be better human beings.
So, The Independent Critic pays special attention to those films and filmmakers that aren't always household names.
We seek out, promote, review and empower the independent filmmaker, the student filmmaker, the short filmmaker, the documentary filmmaker and the experimental filmmaker.
The Independent Critic celebrates films with budgets from a few bucks to a few million bucks.
The Independent Critic embraces films that challenge the ways in which we think, feel, act and live with one another.
The Independent Critic sponsors these films in special screenings, film festivals and in other public outlets. Our first film sponsorship, the magnificent "Munyurangabo," played during the 2008 Indianapolis International Film Festival. More are coming soon!
The Independent Critic is a proud member of The Earth House Collective, a grassroots collective of artists and activists in Indianapolis devoted to using their talents to create a better world. We're also proudly presenting the first ever "Peacemakers International Film Festival" in 2010, and donate a portion of all site proceeds to organizations working to end violence in the lives of children.
If you enjoy rating films and writing reviews yourself, join our film community at Everyone's a Critic!
The Independent Critic...Truly, An Independent Voice for the Reel World.
Peace,
Richard Propes

Imaginary Crimes (2001)
With "Imaginary Crimes," Propes has created one of the most graphic, yet heartfelt accounts ever recorded of childhood sexual abuse. From victim to victor, "Imaginary Crimes" follows Propes from his unimaginable childhood experiences through his fumbling attempts at recovery and, finally, through the darkness and into the Light.
Currently out of print, Propes is actively working to make "Imaginary Crimes" available as an e-book.

Rev. Richard Propes is an award-winning activist/writer from Indianapolis, Indiana. The founder of the Tenderness Network, an Indiana-based child advocacy group, Propes is also an award-winning poet, playwright and film critic. Propes recently started "The Independent Critic," a web community devoted to film criticism, interviews and social action dedicated to peace and justice issues. He also has a sister site, Everyone's a Critic, where you can write reviews and rate movies.
Propes has been awarded the Etheridge Knight Festival's Poetry Prize, and has had four plays produced in Indiana. Winner of the highest awards for community service in both Indiana and Kentucky, Propes was awarded the nation's highest award for child abuse prevention efforts, the Donna J. Stone Award, in 2005. Widely recognized for his intense, yet heartfelt semi-autobiographical poetry about his experiences with childhood sexual abuse, Propes' first collection "Imaginary Crimes" has had several of its poems reprinted in multiple publications. Propes is also the author of "The Secret Heart" and is finishing up work on his latest collection.
Through his non-profit organization, the Tenderness Network, Propes is working to bring to life "Words of Hope," a used bookstore designed exclusively to raise funds for non-profit organizations and to promote the works of authors who might otherwise go unnoticed.

Hi all,
I'm asked pretty regularly "How Can I help the Tenderness Tour?"

Dear Friends,
As I was wheeling this week on "Revolutions for Hope," I was reminded of the famous story about the starfish on the beach. The story, originally written by Loren Eiseley, shares of a man walking along a beach who stumbles across a ...
