Redhare Astoria
260 10th Street
Astoria, OR 97103
I opened Redhare Gallery in May 2008. The idea was to build a place where I could present great visual and musical art in an elegant, but unpretenteous setting. With walls of rough-cut cedar, black display walls and new carpet, I put together a warm room with a beautiful vibe. The gallery is located in Astoria, the oldest American settlement west of the Mississippi, one block south of the Columbia River. This is the "Far Left"!
Since opening, we've hosted dozens of great performers including Jefferson Airplane, Marty Balin, Alice Stuart, James Lee Stanley, John Batdorf, and many more, on our world-class stage. Great sound, lighting, amenities, and especially, an attitude of respect and appreciation for these talented people is helping to spread the word fast within the musical community.
So if you are in Astoria, please drop by and say hello. And catch a fantastic show in an intimate and comfortable setting. Help me support independent music by presenting it in the best way possible - visit Redhare Astoria!
BIO
I am 45 years old, (born on the 20th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor - December 7, 1961), single, male, live in Astoria, Oregon, and am an Internet professional, graphics business owner, and a working musician. I was born in Brooklyn, New York, to parents, Jim and Marie Docherty. I have an older brother, Jimmy, who lives in Connecticut with his wife, Patricia, and daughter, Casey.

I have been writing and playing music for over 30 years. I made my debut with the "Alternative Chorus Songwriters Showcase" at the world-famous Improvisation on Melrose in 1976. I worked with the late, great Jack Segal (who wrote "When Sunny Gets Blue", among many other Tin-Pan Alley favs) at the "American Guild of Authors and Composers" while he was the west coast president. I was published first in 1982 by Kin Vasey, for an ill-fated Motels cut. I've played on scores of recordings and in countless venues since. I have been fortunate enough to have played with great artists, such as Edgar Winter, Tony Award winner Scott Waara, Jason Wade from Lifehouse, international opera star, Juliana Gondek, Nashville recording Artist, Kate Miner, internationally acclaimed bassist, David Miner (Leon Russell, producer of Elvis Costello's King of America), Ron Aniello (producer), Jack Kelly (internationally acclaimed drummer), Dave McKelvy (one of the top harmonica players in the world), Mitchell Sigman from Berlin, British rocker, Steve Counsel and many more. In 2003, I played keyboards on tour with Mary Ramsey and John Lombardo, original members of 10,000 Maniacs and John and Mary and with Ted Mason, formerly of Modern English and currently with The Blue Mocking Birds and heading the record label, Mi5 Recordings. I occassionally play keyboards with up and coming country music star, Gis Johannson and Big City. Most recently, I've been gigging with Latin heart-throb, Roberto Enrique.

I am the owner/operator of the successful web design and advertising creative firm, Red Hare Graphics, in addition to being a working musician, singer and songwriter.
I've been a salesman, a commercial fisherman, a Deadhead, a member of a cult, a short order cook, a recording assistant for Capitol Records, a dishwasher, a Conroys flower delivery guy, a Starbucks barista, an independent record label A/R executive, and built custom fishing rods ScotRods of Morro Bay (and although ScotRods has been out of business for over 14 years, my work is STILL out there catchin' the big ones!) But through it all, the constant thread has been music and art. Since that debut at The Improvisation at 16, I've managed to continue playing and writing music in between the "B-flat gigs" that have paid the bills all these years.

Reluctantly getting into computers in 1990, I quickly began programming hundreds of midi-files and learning to be proficient at digital music at it's very beginning. I the mid-90s, I worked with Sound Source Interactive (now, TDK MediaActive), which designed sounds for synthesizers, and pioneered computer audio clips, including officially licensed Star Trek, Star Wars, and 2001: A Space Odyssey computer products. I've been designing and building web sites since 1996. I was an integrator, promoted shortly to producer at Disney Online, working on the Number One entertainment web site on the 'Net. In 1997, I started my own business called Red Hare Graphics. Red Hare now designs, hosts and maintains web sites for dozens of clients from around the country, as well as creating logos and graphics for companies like Yahoo, McDonald's, Taco Bell, Paramount Studios, General Motors, and many more.
You can also view my complete portfolio of web design, as well as some print and visual art work, at Red Hare Graphics. For a comprehensive look at my artwork, visit my portfolio.

On September 13, 2007, I sailed my 32' sloop, Red Hare, from Channel Islands Harbor, ending my long-time residence in California. I now live on my boat in Astoria, Oregon, which is at the northwest tip of Oregon, at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River. I had had enough hipsters and celebrity chasing to last me a lifetime. Now, it's a simpler gig in an unbelievably beautiful setting. The journey continues ...
