A Small Glitch in Time (2007)
One of the greatest advantages being an artist on your own label is having the autonomy to explore all different genres of music. A Small Glitch In Time took a great deal of time to create. I started writing it way back in February 2006 with a collection of "audio Polaroid's" (sound samples) I've amassed throughout the years. The Polaroid's were essentially the raw data I used as my starting point to begin the journey into the land of Glitch, IDM, Circuit Bending and Cinemagraphic Ambience. On the way, thousands of ideas for songs were discovered, explored, discarded and securely deleted. Trying to find a musical way to merge tiny bits of stuttering noises, blips, vinyl LP static, backwards piano solos, Norwegian and Latin singers, and Kraftwerk-like hypnotic sequences of notes scattered across my two Genelec speakers. This isn't reinventing the wheel or anything like that. So much of the music on A Small Glitch In Time is paying homage to musical heroes old and new, BT, Thomas Dolby, Björk, Vangelis, Squarepusher, DJ Shadow, Caia, Dead Can Dance, Talvin Singh, The Chemical Brothers, Wax Poetic, Massive Attack and Thomas Newman. But everything then gets put into the Under The Radar blender along with the repetitive melody line that hopefully stays in the listeners head for ever. These things being said...I hope the listener will enjoy this unique musical journey!

MEMORIES OF TWILIGHT" is a collection of ten beautiful piano improvisations in styles reminiscent of artists like of George Winston, David Lanz, Jim Brickman and even a little Keith Jarrett. Recorded live digitally without overdubbing, using the new Roland RD-700SX piano. At times the piano is MIDI'ed with Spectrasonices Atmosphere Virtual Synth and Korgs Legacy Collection creating lush orchestral pads. Visual Futurist: music from the original motion picture soundtrack (2005)
Winner of the 2006 Audience Award for best documentary at Dances With Films festival; this documentary, chronicles the life of legendary futuristic artist/designer Syd Mead. Syd's beautiful designs are instantly recognized in such films as "Tron, Blade Runner, 2010 and Aliens." Richard was asked by indy filmmaker Joaquin Montalvan to compose a music score that would be "as beautiful and compelling as Syd's paintings." Like his paintings, Richard's music combines sounds from a future "past and present". Aphex Twin meets Vangelis and Jerry Goldsmith.

Radio Flyer (2004)
"Radio Flyer" is the 2nd project from Under The Radar's producer Richard Souther. Written over the course of several months between the hours of 11pm and 5am; there is a dream-like quality to much of it. Although the music covers multiple styles of playing, it gravitates toward the "downtempo/chillin' area" complete with some electronica blips and smooth jazz elements mixed in. At the time of writing this album, Richard says he was listening to an eclectic combination of composers. "The iPod was shuffling between Cal Tjader, Bjork, John Coltrane, Moby, Duke Ellington, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Vangelis, George Gershwin, Wes Montgomery, David Raskin, Mark Isham, Miles Davis, BT and the Dixie Dregs." Although Radio Flyer's sound is unique, you might hear their influences at different times. One way to describe "Radio Flyer" is: "it's the kind of music that reminds you of something you've never heard before."

A Blip On The Screen (2001)
"A BLIP ON THE SCREEN" by UNDER THE RADAR (aka) RICHARD SOUTHER is Richard's first venture into the realm of electronica. Written almost entirely in the computer using virtual instruments; Richard spent months fine-tuning the sounds as well as the mixes to create a compelling original work of music that lasts over an hour in length. Listeners are calling it "Heirborne 2002" referring to his ground breaking 1985 album which pioneered recording electronic music "live to tape." "A BLIP ON THE SCREEN" is about to be identified.

Illumination, Hildegard von Bingen: The Fire Of The Spirit (1997)
Richard Souther transports the listener to an ethereal realm on each and every note and instrument, with each original arrangement. While the music and words were initially composed and written by Hildegard von Bingen, a highly evolved 12th century mystic, artist, and healer, Richard Souther rekindles the flame with updated interpretations and instruments (synthesizer, keyboards) to appeal to modern ears. Nothing is lost in the transition ... the heart of the listener expands ever wider as the music of the past greets the present, giving and receiving the gift of Spirit.

Cross Currents (1990)
"This was a project I wrote with other musicians in mind. Up to this point I was writing and playing almost all the parts myself on my albums. It was a thrill to hear these guys playing my arrangments in the studio."
This was Richard's first self produced CD. With outstanding session work from Kirk Whalum, Justo Almario, Alex Acuna, and many others; 'Cross Currents' creates a unique form of Fusion Jazz by bringing electronics and live instruments.

Twelve Tribes (1990)
"Here was my exploration into World Music. During that period of my life, I had been listening to lots of Brazilian and African artists. Their influence is all over this album. It was also the first time I acted as co-producer with my friend and brilliant sound designer, Eric Persing."
Produced by Eric Persing and featuring outstanding session players such as Abraham Laboriel and Efrain Toro, 'Twelve Tribes' marries Richard's unique orchestrations and compositions with Latin style percussion and textures.

Douglas Trowbridge: Second Story (1986)
This was the followup to Douglas Trowbridge: Songs Unspoken. It has become very hard to find on CD but it's still available on vinyl I'm told. This was my 2nd opportunity I was given to play the Steinway piano of my dreams... God is so good!

Innermission (1986)
"My second solo album went much deeper into creating kind of a film score for the mind. The album begins with Depths Above which invites the listener to come close and ends with Innermission which conveys hope and triumph."
Produced by Peter York, 'Innermission' presents 'electronic realizations' for keyboards and percussion.

Douglas Trowbridge: Songs Unspoken (1985)
5 Stars... Douglas Trowbridge offers a refreshing cascade of piano music flowing throughout his album Songs Unspoken. Songs Unspoken, originally released under the Meadowlark label, takes the listener through soothing meadows of harmony and pianoscape. Particulary enchanting was Trowbridge's rendition of Finlandia. Crisp piano notes coarse through rivulets of sound as pure and refreshing as a mountain stream.

Heirborne (1985)
"This was the first album I recorded as a solo artist and the most personal. It's collection of melodies and textural moods were compiled over the course of several years. Much of it was written one note at a time into a funny little box called a Roland MSQ-700. It's a very visual and emotional album." RS

About Richard Souther

Grammy nominated artist Richard Souther is a composer, producer, arranger, sound designer and multi-keyboardist who has built a strong reputation as a top contemporary solo instrumentalist for over twenty years. He has created numerous best-selling albums in the New Age, Smooth Jazz and the Classical/Crossover markets as well as acclaimed recordings for the CCM music scene.

Richard was a child prodigy who began studying classical piano at three with then retired Professor Thomas Giles (Dean Of The Music Department/University Of Utah) until he was twelve. He went on to study with the legendary Russian piano teacher Max Willerson and concert pianist Reid Nibley. "During that time, I realized I didn't really enjoy playing other people's music exactly as written and wanted to explore the world of jazz improvisation... and Surf Music!"

While attending middle school during the Sixties in Los Angeles, Souther began playing keyboards in LA Rock bands on the Sunset Strip and developed a love for a wide variety of different types of music. By the early Seventies he was becoming an in-demand session musician who played with numerous artists like Geronimo Black, Feather, Barry McGuire, Richie Furay, Pat and Debbie Boone, and Denice Williams. Souther also began developing his talents as a touring performer playing multi-keyboards with the now legendary vocal group, 2nd Chapter of Acts and renowned guitarist Phil Keaggy.

In 1981, a near fatal bout with botulism abruptly sidetracked Richard's musical career. During the four years it took him to recover, to the point where he could resume a somewhat normal life again, he acquired and mastered a new technology for that time period, using electronic music synthesizers and early computers linked together to create an electronic orchestral palette to compose with. Playing into the computer one note at a time and in spite of the chronic pain, Souther began creating his original and unique blend of instrumental music.

During the mid Eighties a new instrumental label, Meadowlark Records, signed him for his first solo albums, the electronic HEIRBORNE and INNERMISSION. The label also wanted to release his solo, acoustic piano recordings. To reduce confusion about dissimilar projects in the marketplace, the albums...SONGS UNSPOKEN and SECOND STORY, were issued under his middle names- Douglas Trowbridge. Souther left the Meadowlark label and signed with MCA's Narada Label, releasing two mainstream New Age and World Music projects for them. CROSS CURRENTS, a light jazz ensemble project, featuring the talents of Alex Acuna, Abraham Laboriel, Chester Thompson and Kirk Whalum, released in 1989. Following up Richard co-produced TWELVE TRIBES, an exploration of African and Brazilian music, with renowned sound designer Eric Persing in 1990. Both albums received considerable airplay on the New Adult Contemporary (NAC) radio stations in the U.S. and continue to world-wide. Richard returned to the CCM market when he produced VISION OF THE VALLEY for Don Francisco and won a Dove Award for producing the Twila Paris "SANCTUARY" album.

In 1994 Richard received world wide recognition for is groundbreaking album "VISION: The Music Of Hildegard von Bingen", which won the Billboard Classical/Crossover album of the year award. He then followed it up with ILLUMINATION: The Music Of Hildegard von Bingen "The Fire Of The Spirit" for Sony Classical.

In 2000 Richard began exploring the world of Electronica Music with the release of "A BLIP ON THE SCREEN" followed up by "RADIO FLYER" and the new "A Small Glitch In Time" written using the pseudonym "UNDER THE RADAR"

His music has been used in numerous films, TV and commercials around the world by companies like Mercedes Benz, CBS Winter Olympics, PBS (Sesame Street) A&E, CNN, NBC Dateline: Secrets behind 'The Da Vinci Code', Renault, Fuji Film, Delta Airlines, Ford Motor Company, VH-1, MTV, The Bose Corporation, The Jim Henson Company and most recently in the 2004 HBO Golden Globe winning film "Iron Jawed Angels". He has recently finished the score to a new independent film documentary: "VISUAL FUTURIST: THE ART AND LIFE OF SYD MEAD" chronicling the life of the famed artist/designer. The DVD is now available at www.sydmead.com.

Richard is now Music Director of High Pointe Church in Midway, Utah.
