General Interests
My interests include reading and writing, of course. I ran my first two sprint triathlons in the summer of 2007, and I like cooking Szechuan Chinese food. I look forward to more cycling in 2008.

I am married to my first love and have three boys. I am a full-time missionary, writing software for the front-line folks, and I've never had a better job in my life.
Books
The authors who have most influenced me are Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Ray Bradbury. Robert Louis Stevenson is of note. I like O. Henry's humor and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's mysteries. Oswald Chambers, Hannah Whitall Smith, and Elizabeth Elliot each have influence in nonfiction. I also have a growing collection of Greek references that I use more than any other reference.
Published Works
"Aliens in the Church" in Dragons, Knights, & Angels (2007)
Science Fiction. An alien with a sandy rear end wants to use the church building.

Blurb:
The three moons of Nornic cast a blue glow over the old church. Converted from an old transport, it lay on the edge of the ocean, like the carcass of a beached whalephant, its metallic skin sinking between its ribs. The bent antennae of its guidance system sagged, unused. Waves kissed the shore, hushing the grief of mortality.
"Fun with Humans" in Dragons, Knights, & Angels (2007)
Humor/Speculative Fiction. Gabriel the angel tells his version of the birth of John the Baptist to a new arrival in heaven.

Blurb:
I turned myself invisible and said, "Boo!" The old guy jumped straight up into the air like a cat. He must've cleared more than a cubit.
"Hitting the Wall" in The One Year Life Verse Devotional (2007)
A devotional.

From Amazon: "Is there a verse from the Bible that has special significance to you? Maybe it's one piece of Scripture God used to inspire, challenge, or rescue you at a turning point in your life. Maybe it's a verse you learned as a child from a grandparent. Or one you recite each morning to begin your day. The One Year Life Verse Devotional contains stories of well-known authors and speakers, athletes and entertainers. Uncover how these key verses helped define people's role in God's plan--whether they are Bible characters or ordinary people. Discover God's revelations to his people through Scripture, including your very own life verse."

"How to Change Your Church Persona" in The Wittenburg Door (2007)
Humor.

Blurb:
If you want to change your image, join a church. If you become someone new at your existing church, people will think you've had a religious experience. Don't take the risk.
"Stupid Computer" in Ray Gun Revival (2007)
A near-future short story set in Detroit. A hunter of people uses an AI in a car.

Blurb:
"You said, 'Open up,' then, 'Open sesame.' I don't know what a 'sesame' is. At least, not a sesame you can sit in. I know what a sesame tree is, but--"
"Sword Drills" in the Wittenburg Door (2005)
Humor.

Blurb:
"No one's that fast," said the woman.

The pastor's face remained rigid. "He got it right."

"How?"

"He had it memorized!"

"No fair!" said the girl.
"The Witnessing Evaluation Committee" in the Wittenburg Door (2005)
Humor.

Blurb:
"I was wondering if you folks ever met Jesus."

"Gonzalez or Jiminez?"

"Um, no. Christ."

"Don't swear," Candy said sweetly.
"Visitiation Team Raid" in the Wittenburg Door (2005)
Humor.

Beware who you invite in at night.
"A Greeter Eluded" in the Wittenburg Door (2004)
Humor.

Blurb:
"The sleet has been coming down for half an hour, but he hasn't gone inside to get warm. His smile is pasted to his face. He's not human. He's a machine. He's a Greeter if I ever saw one."
"Both Rejected and Accepted" in The Christian Communicator (2004)
Personal Experience. A story that was rejected than accepted by the same editor.
"Testing, 1, 2, 3...Testing...Check?" in SQL Server Professional (2004)
Software Development How-To. Tells how to use unit tests on a relational database.
"The Dumb Spake" in the Wittenburg Door (2004)
Humor.

Watch your language.
"The Thermostat" in The Wittenburg Door (2004)
Humor.

Blurb:
"See that?" With the slightest gesture of his head, he motioned to a plastic box on the wall. "I guard the thermostat."
"104 Tips, Tricks, and Traps in Oracle Reports v.3.0" in Oracle Professional (2001)
Software Development How-To
"Hochstetler Document Obtained from London" in the Jacob Hochstetler Family Association Newsletter (2001)

For fiction, a content editor identifies:

  • problems with character development, dialogue, and point of view

  • problems with plot and lack of tension

  • problems with setting and theme

Steve has critiqued more than two hundred short stories as Assistant Editor at at Mindflights and The Sword Review.
