One Step Over The Border (2007)
It's a romp. A buddy road adventure. It's romantic comedy. Some call it CowboyLit. Rodeo cowboy Hap Bowman's on a quest to find Juanita, the gal of his dreams. Meanwhile, he won't date anyone not named Juanita. Trouble is, he hasn't seen her in 18 years. "An idiot obsession," his roping partner, Laramie Majors, chides. But Laramie finally agrees to one last summer's jaunt down the Rio Grande to look for the mystery senorita . . . if Hap promises to give it all up if she can't be found.

Paperback Writer (2003)
Paul James Watson is a paperback writer. But is he writing fiction or living it? He is the Watson of his imagination, who is living a life in his mind of new and exciting situations, conversations, and relationships. It is not long before the lines of reality, fiction, and imagination become so entwined that the real Watson threatens to become lost. "...a zany look into the novelist's mind and a whole lotta fun."--Angela Elwell Hunt

My life verse . . . "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" Matthew 6:33
I've been married to writer, Janet Chester Bly, more than four decades and still crazy in love with her. She co-authored 18 books with me and I just released book #100, One Step Over The Border, Center Street/Hachette Book Group USA. I hang my hat in northern Idaho at 4,000 ft. elev., on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation. I feel mighty privileged to be father to 3 sons: Russell, Michael, & Aaron. The family includes daughters-in-law, Lois, Michelle & Rina Joye, plus teen grandkids, Zachary & Miranda. Another's on the way.
I'm a third generation westerner and spent my first 30 years working family ranches and farms in central California. Meanwhile, I collect and restore antique Winchesters; study the history of the Old West; and I've been constructing Broken Arrow Crossing, a false front western village next to my home that serves as a place for bar-b-ques and photo ops.
I'm seldom seen without cowboy boots, hat, and jeans, even in the pulpit, except when I'm on the golf greens. Some other recent fiction books include: The Horse Dreams Series--Memories of a Dirt Road Town, The Mustang Breaker, and Wish I'd Known You Tears Ago (B&H); Paperback Writer (B&H); and Fortunes of the Black Hills Series (B&H Publishers).

I once watched a scientist on TV explain what went haywire with the Hubbard telescope floating out in space. Seemed like an ironic use of words?a billion dollar computer goes haywire. I wondered if any of those NASA officials have ever been around ha...

In the Old West, a person's reputation often meant the difference between survival and death. So, it was a guarded commodity. For many cowboys, his reputation was the only thing of value he could rightly call his own. Lots of terms sprang up that des...

Most folks know cowboys on the trail filled up with biscuits, bacon, and beans. Chuckwagon beans usually included onions, garlic, lots of chili powder, and salt pork. Beef was a rare commodity unless a cow broke a leg; there was a troublemaker in the...

The history of the Old West could be told through legendary firearms. There were eras when the Winchester '73 ruled the range. Or the Colt Peacemaker stalked the towns. Or the Sharps Big Fifty brought down the last of the buffalo.
Before these, t...

What's In A Name?

Parents name their kids. Novelists create 100s of characters. It all started with Stuart Brannon and Sandy Thompson for me. What's in a name? For a fiction writer, naming characters can be his or her biggest creative challenge. Here's my take: http:/...
