Stephen James Underwood was born in Bakersfield, CA December 13, 1975. At the age of 2, Stephen stood on a bench in Church and played beat for beat on the tambourine during song service.
Stephen grew up always wanting to be a Lighthouse Boy. Literally being captivated of the drums by one of The Lighthouse Boys former drummers (Tornado) Tim Cantu at the age of 4. Stephen began to get out the pots and pans in the kitchen to play the drums. So his family bought him a drum set. They would buy another drum set 2 years later since he wore out the 1st set, he would also ware out the 2nd set.
In the summer of 1986 Stephen was finally allowed on stage as a Tambourine player, Stephen also took the opportunity to closely watch Tim on the drums to see how he played. That same year brought the very first time Stephen ever saw "Buddy Rich" playing on TV. In 1987 Tim Cantu packed up his very first Drum Set and presented it to Stephen to get him started with playing in their home Church. In 1988 Stephen's parents bought him a used 7 piece 1970s Blue CB-700 Drum set; He also took over the Drums in The Lighthouse Boys during this time.
Stephen had recorded Tambourine in the studio with the band in 1987. In 1990 Stephen got his first shot at recording drums in the studio. In 1994 Stephen's dreams began to come about when The Lighthouse Boys re-entered what used to be "Buck Owens Recording Studio," now known as "Fat Tracks." Since that time Stephen started his dream working with people in the industry, engineers who worked with Tom Petty and Korn, Musicians and Producers who have worked high in Christian, Southern Gospel, Country and Rock Music.
Since 1994 Stephen has toured thru out several states in the U.S.A. Stephen has played Drums for Gospel Legend James Blackwood during his final west coast performance in 1999 during The Great Western Quartet Convention at the Sellend Arena in Fresno, CA. In addition to The Lighthouse Boys, Stephen has played for such groups as The Watchmen Quartet, The Circuit Riders and He has started his own groups, Images of Christ and PIC. As a member of The Lighthouse Boys, Stephen has performed in concert with such groups as The Speers, The Imperials, J.D. Sumner and The Stamps, The Kingsmen, The Cathedrals, Gold City, The Hoppers, The Florida Boys, The Weatherfords and many other Great Southern Gospel Legends.
In addition to the Selland Arena, Stephen has performed on such stages as The Save Mart Center in Fresno, CA, The Sacramento Convention Center, The Rabobank Arena (formally Centennial Gardens) in Bakersfield, CA and (formerly) The Fox Theater in Davis, CA.
In 2004 one of Stephen's biggest dreams came true when The Lighthouse Boys surprised him with his first 4 piece 1977 Rogers Drum Set. Now in 2007 after slowing things down with The Lighthouse Boys concert schedule, Stephen is apart of building a new recording studio to begin work on The Lighthouse Boys next album and to start helping out new up and coming Christian bands and solo artists.
