The Light Across the River (2008)
"This is a suspenseful page-turner with believable main characters that have palpable struggles. The adventure, history, and even some humor with a bit of old fashioned romance thrown in for good measure make for an enjoyable read for middle schoolers on up. Because of the superb writing comprised of well-chosen words and precise descriptions in keeping with the time period, this book is a pleasure to read."

Kathy Gelzer, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

Across the Wide River (2004)
"Across the Wide River plunges young readers into the life and death drama of the pre-Civil War Underground Railroad, as seen through the eyes of Lowry Rankin, son of abolitionist Presbyterian minister John Rankin of Ripley, Ohio. His harrowing adventures bring alive to today's youth America's struggle between slavery and freedom in the 19th century."

—PETER MARSHALL, author of The Light and the Glory and son of CATHERINE MARSHALL, author of Christy

About Stephanie Reed
I write books about real-life Christians that changed history. I love bringing their exciting stories to life for readers like you.

WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MY FIRST BOOK, ACROSS THE WIDE RIVER? When I was in elementary school, my family used to drive from Dayton, Ohio to my grandparents' farm in Kentucky. On each trip, we drove through Ripley, Ohio, where I saw the Reverend John Rankin's home, a former station of the Underground Railroad. My curiosity about the Rankins led me to do extensive research decades later. I learned that the Rankin family fought slavery for forty years. ACROSS THE WIDE RIVER features eldest son Lowry Rankin and his battle against slavery, as well as his personal struggle against God's call to be a minister.

WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MY NEW BOOK, THE LIGHT ACROSS THE RIVER? Here's the back cover copy:

It's 1837 and the Rankin home continues to be a beacon of freedom along the Underground Railroad. Johnny, the seventh of the thirteen Rankin children, is eager to help his family in their fight for freedom, but his father and his older brother, Lowry, tell him he is too young to keep a secret as important as the Underground Railroad. Johnny knows he should keep his mouth shut, but he cares so much about what his family does that he can't keep quiet.

Unexpectedly, Johnny finds himself in a position to help a woman named Eliza escape to the North. Will he be able to help her to freedom, or will he let the wrong secret slip out at the wrong time? This intense and touching sequel to Across the Wide River offers another glimpse into a dark period of America's past, and profiles the courageous and godly people who helped bring slavery to an end.
