Fresh Hymns: Contemporary Piano Interpretations (2005)
"...I had to write to you to tell you how very wonderful "Be Thou My Vision" is. I cried when I listened to it the first time, and I now listen to it all the time... You have captured the soft, yet steadfast resolve of this ancient saint to bring the light of Christ to those dwelling in darkness of pagan Ireland. I salute you and the emotions that you put into your music."
"...I used to think that the old hymns weren't as nice to listen to as the newer contemporary songs or the praise choruses. I have gained a new appreciation for them by listening to Joel's arrangements and beautiful playing."
The hymns presented here predate our earliest memories. Many of these melodies were penned by a member of a generation that has passed, and the complete story of each hymn is unknowable. God alone remembers that unnamed soldier of the Revolution, Civil War, the World Wars, or any of the wars in recent memory, stirred on by a hymn from his youth. The same is true of the bereaved son or daughter, comforted in his or her time of loss; or of that man who had given up all hope, only to be drawn to salvation by the song drifting from the revival tent.
What you will find are twenty hymn melodies, some ancient, peformed from the heart of pianist Joel Rosenberger. Joel interprets each hymn in his contemplative, imaginative, improvisational style, creating a unique work of art that respects the origin and power of each melody. He intertwines familiar musical themes with his colorful harmonies and delicate, expressive action upon the keys, resulting in piano arrangements suitable for quiet times of contemplation and meditation.

Snow and Ivory: Solo Piano Portraits for Christmas (2005)
Joel Rosenberger (Fresh Hymns) approaches his second album with the same delicacy and creativity as the first. His original piano interpretations of Christmas classics include a number of favorites, such as Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, O Holy Night, and Stille Nacht, but also include the less often heard carols like I Wonder as I Wander, Le Sommeil de l'Enfant Jesus (The Sleep of the Baby Jesus) and Ar Hyd y Nos (All Through the Night.)
This collection offers music that captures the peace, joy, and mystery of the season. It's perfect for tree trimming, winding down after a busy day of holiday activities, or contemplating the true meaning of Christmas.

Joel Rosenberger's music is quiet. You would probably fall asleep during his concert. And it's probably not advisable to listen while operating heavy machinery.
Oh yes, and he plays hymns. Constantly. Songs that predate your earliest memory. Your grandmother probably sang these songs in the kitchen. But although Joel performs these hymns in a way that is comfortably familiar, like an old friend, they are still somehow, different.
Because he likes to improvise and invent, borrowing techniques and harmonies from classical, roots, folk, and jazz. His style at the piano is poetic, instraspective, almost philosophical. Like he's dreaming up new ways to express the melody and harmonies of each piece, in real time. And he probably is. Many of his performances are completely unique for that reason.
So if you don't need to stay awake for some reason, listen to music that is born from and made for contemplation. Check out the countermelody in Be Thou My Vision. The sustained, ambient tones of Angels in the Snow. The climax of God Be With You Till We Meet Again. The soaring clarinet in The Day Thou Gavest Lord has Ended.
So sit back, and close your eyes. And try to stay awake.

Ambient Pads

I like to come up with new music, like Papa John's likes to come up with new pizzas. Lately I've been interested in ambient piano music, so late last night I was working on pads, those subtle background sounds that swell behind the piano and fade in...

Your Fresh Pianist was number 96 out of about 4000 artists on the folk chart this morning! Since this kind of stuff is normally fleeting, I wanted to enjoy it while I can.
According to ReverbNation, their charts are based on "the relative value o...

This is an ambient piano piece, suggestive of my visit to the Saratoga battlefield last summer. Here is a place of peace and serenity, that for one brief moment in history saw a violent conflict. It's about peace, restored. This link will launch t...

I've been working on an original ambient piano piece, complete with rich reverbs and a complex pad. I'm now working it over to smooth out all the rough spots, including one note in particular that's bothering me. Not the placement of the note itsel...
