When the Sky Fell (2009)
(You can order the book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, and at Silver Leaf Books)
Since the dawn of time, an ancient evil has sought complete and unquestioned dominion over the galaxy, and they have found...us.
The year is 2217 and a fleet of stellar cruisers led by Commander Frank Yamane has amassed at Mars to make a stand against humanity's greatest threat, the Deravan armada. Outnumbered, outclassed, and outgunned, Yamane's plan to stop them fails, leaving all of Earth at the mercy of an enemy that has shown them none.
Faced with the planet's imminent destruction, Commander Yamane has no choice but to seek the help of the Antarans, an alien civilization he had defeated in a war a decade before. Though they have every reason not to come to Earth's rescue, Yamane sets forth on a desperate journey to the Antaran home world, knowing that the survival of mankind is hanging by a thread (published by Silver Leaf Books).

Dublin (2007)
Say the name of Dublin, and for many, it conjures up an image of weary Irish pioneers who, after traveling thousands of miles along the dusty byways of the California Trail, stood on the crest of a hill overlooking a valley filled with promise and a hope for the future. This was the place they would call home. Inspired by memories of rolling green hills and wide-open countryside of their beloved Ireland, they chose a name that would help maintain their connection to a land that now only lived in their memories. While it is tempting to embrace this romantic notion of Dublin's beginning as the way it really happened, as is often the case, the truth is far richer and more diverse than first realized (published by Arcadia Publishing).

I currently resides in San Jose, CA with my wife and two children. I graduated from San Jose State University in 1986 with a B.A. in History, and San Jose Christian College in 1994. In 2004, I wrote a Bible study guide entitled, "BibleQuest." I have also written, "Dublin," a book chronicling the history of Dublin, CA. Published by Arcadia Press, it was released in 2007. In May 2009, my first novel, "When the Sky Fell," is scheduled to be released by Silver Leaf Books. I have also published short stories in several magazines, including "Surf's Up," a story awarded "Best of Show" in the Residential Aliens 2007 flash fiction contest. Just recently, I took first place in the Dead Robots Society's 2008 1st chapter writing contest for my latest novel, "After the Cross," and 1st place in the Preditors & Editors 2009 reader's poll for my short story, "Beyond Horizon's Edge."
And while I am pleased God has given me a measure of success with the books and short stories I have published, my goal for everything I write is to honor Him who made salvation available to us all, and if those who read my stories are brought closer to the Father as a result, then I have done my job well.

Why you should set you story aside for a while

When you are done with your novel, or whatever else you are writing, it is my firm belief you should let it sit for a while and simmer. You can either take a break for a few weeks, or work on another writing project. When you feel you've put enough d...

How long should you keep trying to get published

Only you can decide where that magic number resides, not some arbitrary industry average. Some people hit pay dirt from the get-go, while others take years before they get their story sold, if at all. For myself, I spent 2 years sending out my novel ...

Why editing the life's blood of writing

I must have edited my novel, and I'm talking about significant edits, at least 10 times before I got it to the point of becoming publishable. The first ones are always the toughest. It where we make our mistakes, but it's also where we really learn h...

Getting past a rejection letter
|
2/13/2009 - 10:25 AM

Just so you know, in case no one has told you yet, writing is probably the most subjective medium there is. Or to put it colloquially, "One man's junk is another man's treasure." When you receive that rejection letter in the mail, and you will, do no...

How do you know you are getting close as a writer

I think the hardest time for a writer is when they have progressed to the point of almost making it. In my own experience, the early rejection letters for my novel came back in the mail only a couple of weeks after sending out query letters and sampl...

Actually, not only am I a fan, but I'm an author! I'm currently writing a sci-fi/supernatural/romance novel + series titled - The Core Series: The Beginning! Its a very different story from any others out there[at least that I have read]. There's more information on my facebook page: www.facebook.com/authorninaz and also my blog: www.ninazivkovic.blogspot.com
I look forward to connecting with you!

Deadlines can get a bit tight sometimes. Glad you got the revision finished. I hope that even though you didn't make the deadline your book was still accepted. Awesome that you're working on a sequel. May the writing flow easy and that you both have lots of fun with it.
I've been busy editing a novel by David Meigs. I'm also working on a plot for a novel, so I'm keeping pretty busy.

Mike, thanks for signing my guestbook. My ancestor, Pierre Chastain, a Huguenot who fled Catholic France, arrived in Virginia July 12, 1700, but I have Cherokee ancestors that go back much farther. My grandmother and her mother are listed on the Guion Miller Cherokee Roll of the Eastern Tribe of Cherokees made in 1906, I think. The farthest back I've been able to trace my Indian ancestry is the mid-1700s. I don't think they kept written genealogical records until they started marrying European settlers.

I agree. The short story can get a message across or feeling in a more potent way. At least thats what I am beginning to learn so far. A novel is a much bigger monster to tackle.

Thanks. I was reading the writer's market yesterday and from what I was getting from it, they put you off from even trying to publish short stories. They were saying because such a small audience actually reads short stories.

LOL All I know is that affiliated publishers and authors are the only ones I know of that define the market as secular and Christian. General Market publishers might make the correction themselves but it's clearly not worth their time. :) They are the big dogs after all!

|
|

Of course you meant general market publisher and not secular. Yes. That's just a pet peeve of mine. LOL I see secular as worldly. You don't write worldly fiction you silly man. Secular is used, as far as I know, to differintiate something from Christian. I've never known it to be used any other way. :)
And I find general market publishers taking MS from Christians all the time. They're usually just not very open to highly overt and very targeted work. This must be some MS! ;)

This sounds very "Creed-ish!" *is that a word?" Okay. Good. Evangelical target audience written to appeal to most anyone, or rather not overt for the sake of being over and not preachy for the sake of being preachy, a style that plagues the Christian market here in the good ol' US of A (for reasons I won't elaborate on. ;)
You mean there's Sci-Fi in this? And you have to tell me who your publisher is!
But since I'm so very interested in helping promote any author who is Christian and not affiliated get attention that they won't get because they aren't affiliated (like being shelved in larger Christian bookstores, being automatically sold on the more popular Christian on-line sites,) I'll do what I can. :D
I'll email you. :)

LOL Personal appearances. Let's just stick with my time is filled with writing and bothering people here on SL. Nobody is really interested in seeing me. BUT onto more important matters. I'm honored you think a blurb from me would do more than make people go "huh, who's Sue Dent?" I take it your work isn't overt and targeted but rather simply a good story written by a couple of great Christian guys who don't compromise their own personal beliefs when writing? If this is the case, and I won't have to read a message laden story with a "come to Jesus message" waiting for me (certainly nothing wrong with a "come to Jesus" message when used in the correct type of environment,) then I'd love to help you guys. *Sue strapping on space suit in preparation for possible Sci-fi journey* I shall e-mail you soon unless you tell me your message is overt and targeted. But I think I already know it isn't. :)
