I don't know. I wish I was influenced by Jean Giono, John Fante, Charles Bukowski, Bob Dylan, Louie Armstrong, Charlie Chaplin, Charlie Parker, Henry Miller, Fellini. I have put myself under their influence. They have put me under their spells, but I have no idea if you can tell that by listening to my music or if that is the way it works. I am sure that junk culture got through to me when I was growing up. It doesn't matter. Art can be made out of junk. I think things I saw influenced my music. There were dresses my grandmother made and wore, black and white pictures my dad took of Japan in the 50's, my brother's reel to reel tape recorder, the record player we had that folded up into a suitcase, the trees in Big Sur, the streets of east Hollywood, clothes hanging to dry in the backyard next to the old incinerator that my great grandmother grew flowers in, the song my mother's music box played, the huge white balloon that would overcome the guy on "The Prisoner" when he tried to escape, Emma Peel's catsuit, any move Fred Astaire made.......... This is a question to be answered with volumes, not a glib answers for a press bio. I guess we want to know who those we admire admire, thinking that if we admired likewise, we would also be admired..... or something.

About (Leslie) Sam Phillips
Name: Sam Phillips -- same name as the honorable gentleman of Sun Records fame, but a different (female) person.

Occupation: Songwriter, Singer, Composer (Gilmore Girls 1999-2007), and now Producer, having produced my own SP (Short-Playing) recording for Nonesuch.

Influences: More than I could possibly write about, but here goes?

Sister Rosetta Tharpe: She inspired a new song on my record that Alison Krauss and Robert Plant also recorded for their Raising Sand album.

The musicians who played on Don't Do Anything: Drummer Jay Bellerose, violinist Eric Gorfain, and pianist & keyboard player Patrick Warren. Jay has a collection of blues, country and mystery on his iPod that I have been trying to steal for 3 years. He also has a machine that plays 78's. There is something enchanting about watching a record spin as you listen. The noise of the disc and needle make it sound better.

1950's & 60's-era Advertisements: The song "Little Plastic Life" is about the domestic dreams we try out on each other...and ourselves. I recycled Madison Ave. to advertise the things we can't buy.

Electricity: I have 2 guitars. One has to be plugged in. Electricity sounded good to me as I was making this record.

Time: There are some songs you can't write until you've lived long enough. At this point, I am much more interested in the things that are bigger than TV, smaller than mass culture.

Hollywood: I was born in east Hollywood. I just found out that Charles Bukowski worked at the post office right around the corner from my grandmother's house. I might have even sold him some lemonade when I was a kid, though I hear that wasn't his drink. The excesses of Hollywood go down the wrong side of the tracks and up the right side. The religious and experimental/alternative lifestyles have always thrived here because so many people come to Hollywood with dreams that get broken (or come true) and need to be replaced. I'd rather make art than make my dreams come true. I'd rather be interested and inspired. "Flowers Up" is about when the dreams come true. "Can't Come Down" was inspired by a famous Los Angeles preacher in the 1930's whose church became one of the most popular tourist attractions, partly because of the solace offered to those broken dreamers.

Smelly Bibles: When I was eight years old, I was given my first Bible at Hollywood Presbyterian Church by a minister who looked like a football star/leading man. Around the same time my beloved dance teacher gave me a small bottle of perfume, which I loved too much to use. After reading the story of Mary pouring her best perfume oil on Jesus' feet, I decided to pour my whole bottle of perfume on the Bible. Since that perfume was my only treasure at the time, it was an extravagant expression of faith. That smelly Bible was one of my first attempts to make art.

In one of the most important election years in the history of our United States, I am bringing out a record called "Don't Do Anything". This is not a political statement. The line of the song it's taken from is "I love you when you don't do anything". I might have written this to my child, a lover, a friend, a dead person, or all of these. Maybe I wanted someone to write it to me. Maybe an extravagant expression of faith is the last thing we need this year. Maybe it's the first. There is a lot to do in between.

Favorite Books: Lately, I like the ones with pictures. Drawing From Life: The Journal As Art; My Life and Times by Henry Miller; Ed Ruscha: Photographer; You Are The Measure by Gordon Matta-Clark, and everything by Jean Giono, because he writes such beautiful pictures.

Favorite Films: After a recent visit to Forest Lawn I watched The Loved One and loved it. Because I have a child, I have seen most of Miyazaki's animated films, which are all unique and wonderful.

Boots or Shoes? Boots, always.

Favorite Hobby: Trying to make order out of chaos. Most of the time, it doesn't work.

Bio:

(Leslie) Sam Phillips began her musical career as a vocalist in the early 1980s, singing background parts for Christian artists Mark Heard, Randy Stonehill and others.

Born in 1962, Phillips was raised in Glendale, California. As a child she became fascinated by philosophy and religion, primarily fundamentalism; she began writing songs at the age of 14 as an outlet for exploring her Christian beliefs, as well as coping with family strife. In 1984, under the name Leslie Phillips, she released her first LP, "Beyond Saturday Night", on the Contemporary Christian label Myrhh. Within the limited framework of the Christian rock community, Phillips became a star; her records, which also included 1984's "Dancing With Danger" and 1985's "Black and White in a Grey World", regularly sold upwards of 200,000 copies, and she was a tremendous live draw while touring churches and coffeehouses.

With the aptly-titled "The Turning", released in 1987, Phillips first teamed with producer T-Bone Burnett Grammy Award recipient and renowned pop producer who also helmed Bob Dylan's voyage into Christianity. "Recollection" was the final Christian music release consisting of a "best of" and remixed demos of previously released material.

After Her contract ended with Myrhh/Word, Phillips declared and absence from the Christian music industry, Leslie changed back to her childhood nickname Sam and signed a multi album contract with Virgin Records. She went on to record 4 albums and one best of release with Virgin. In 2001 Phillps signed a deal with the Folk/Acoustic label Nonesuch with 2 acclaimed releases "Fandance" and "A Boot And A Shoe". Today Sam is working on her first self produced release slated for a 2008 release. Though Phillps no longer records in the CCM or commercial pop industry, Her Music and Interviews she continues to express faith, relationships and Love through her impressionistic music.

Sam also had a role on the silver screen by playing a mute terrorist in "Die Hard with a vengance". She also has written and produce music for the hit CW TV show "Gilmore Girls" through it's finally.

Sam's new self produced CD "Don't Do Anything" will be releasing in stores and online June, 3rd 2008.

Also for the first time in 20 years she will be performing at a Major Christian Music Festival in New Hampshire called SoulFest performing on 2 stages August 2nd 2008. She will be sharing this stage on the same date as Third Day, Rebecca St. James, Skillet and Bethany Dillon.

Oh goodness... thank you so much for the gift of friendship here at Shoutlife. I've been listening to your music since the early 80's :-)

One of my ALL time favorite songs is from "The Indescribable Wow" it is "What Do I Do." It's hard to explain... but I connect with that song, both in message and music. Just gorgeous...

Once again... thanks you :-)
