Lauren's Call
As we walked into the library to pick up our daughter, we heard voices speaking insults about a third person. As we turned the corner around a stack of books, we realized they were talking about our daughter. Two young men were making very insulting remarks about a young woman that just wanted to be friends. It wasn't the first time that kind of thing has brought my wife of over 23 years to a point between tears and anger. People don't understand Lauren because she is somewhere between, what society calls, dull normal and borderline. What that means is that her IQ is not within, what society calls, the normal range. Lauren doesn't always do what is socially acceptable. Her responses are not always on topic. As a 22 year old young woman, she wants to talk about things that most 12 to 14 year old girls talk about. No matter how hard we try, she cannot find a job. She doesn't even fit in at most Churches.
Lauren's Call is a work in process. As parents of a child with, what society calls, disabilities we are calling out to other parents or guardians (when we say parents from now on it will include other guardians also) of children with mild to borderline mental disabilities. As a work in process, we can only offer an ear to hear and a voice to pray at this time, but the goal is to get parents together to get the resources to help one another. My wife, Sherry, has a dream of opening a special kind of place where our children (regardless of age) can work, play, praise and worship, and interact. Again, this is a work in process. The first step is to start an Internet support group and this is it - Lauren's Call.
Lauren's Call would also like to reach out to intercessory prayer warriors. We need a team of people praying.
