I love to check out the circulars in the Sunday paper to find out what movies I can buy for $9.99 or less. And everytime I go into a store that sells movies I can't help it, I just can't make myself leave until I have browsed the selection. I love to watch movies. I have an abundance of DVD's, which include Sidney Poitier, James Stewart and Henry Fonda collections, because there's nothing like watching movies starring the Hollywood greats.
I'm into reading, too, and I've gotten in the habit of posting honest reviews on Amazon once I've finished a book.
And I love to listen to music; especially when the song has an uplifting, encouraging message.
|
|
I listen to music from many genres. Christian & Gospel is what I listen to most. I also enjoy R&B, Jazz, pop, and some country. I don't have as many cds as I do dvd's, but I have quite a bit; there are so many good music artists out there. Heather Headley & Kirk Franklin are my favorite artists. I also really like India Arie, Nicole C. Mullen, Leona Lewis, John Mayer, Alicia Keys, tobyMac, Michael W. Smith, Chrisette Michele & Trin-i-tee 5:7.
|
|
I read mostly Christian fiction, but not always; it depends on the content. I like to read young adult as well as adult novels. Homer Price by Robert McCloskey has been a favorite book since my teacher read it to the class in grade school. Also Hot Girl by Dream Jordan, Up Pops the Devil by Angela Benson, Sisters & Lovers by Connie Briscoe, Eyes of a Child by Richard North Patterson, Joy by Victoria Christopher Murray, and Nothing But Drama by ReShonda Tate Billingsley.
|
|
My favorite movies are "The Old Settler" w/Debbie Allen & Phylicia Rashad (The ending is heartbreaking, but Debbie Allen's character keeps me laughing to that point), "No Time for Sergeants" w/Andy Griffith and "Harvey" w/James Stewart.
TV: I like shows with courtroom scenes the most; I watch Matlock and Law and Order just about everyday. I'm starting to get into some of the SciFi shows- nothing too weird with monsters and strange creatures, though. And I like Monk and NCIS.

Choices (2007)
Five teenage girls make decisions about boyfriends and premarital sex... Shauntice Johnston lives in a world of domestic abuse. Her dad beats her mom, so she doesn't trust guys. Angel Nichols feels neglected by her workaholic mother and she doesn't know who her father is. She lost her virginity at an early age for the attention. LaKeeta Wilson is pregnant and she got that way on purpose. Bridgette Anderson feels very strongly about abstinence and nobody is going to change her mind. Hope Patterson lives a sheltered life because of her mother's strict rules. The word "sex" isn't in her vocabulary until she suffers a loss.

About Katrina L. Burchett
|
Katrina L. Burchett is the third born of her parents' six children; the shy, quiet one who, to this day, expresses herself better with the written word. As far back as she can remember it felt natural to have a piece of paper and a pen or pencil in hand. In grade school she wrote a play or two that her classmates acted out for teachers and their students. During her middle and high school years creating poems was what she loved most, and a couple of them were printed in the local newspaper.
Burchett launched a small book publishing company in 2007, naming it after her teenage niece, Kapri. Choices is Burchett's debut novel. She wanted to go deeper than the teen sexual activity and teen pregnancy statistics, so she wrote an emotional, thought-provoking read exploring the reasons why some young people make the choice to become sexually active, and why others choose to abstain... Shauntice, Angel, Bridgette, LaKeeta, and Hope are teenage girls making decisions about boyfriends and premarital sex.
Choices is the first of a trilogy. The next novel will explore teen parenting and the relationships Shauntice, Angel, Bridgette, LaKeeta and Hope have with their parents. It will also delve more into the lives of the guys in Choices. And the third novel will focus on teens and drinking.
Once the trilogy is complete, Lord willing, Kapri Books will publish the works of aspiring authors.
*****************
"Young readers will identify with Burchett's realistic characters, who are true to life and spare no one, not even themselves, of their imperfections. Hip, hip, hooray to Burchett for not trying to create unbelievably perfect characters, but making a choice to give us real characters we can cheer on instead!"

RAWSISTAZ REVIEWERS
"Choices by Katrina L. Burchett is characterized as "Young Adult Fiction", I think it should be known as a wondrous work of Young Adult Christian Fiction... Burchett wrote a well told, well-written story that will make you laugh, cry and, best of all, feel. Every emotion you could possibly have will come out while reading this catchy, fast-paced novel. I recommend this book to readers of all genres. I loved it!"

"The dialogue is especially frank and honest, and the characters ring true. This is a book that is full of real experiences that doesn't flinch away from the darker aspects of life, but instead faces them and sends out a strong encouraging message to the readers about living with what life deals you, and where to find the strength to do so."

TEENSREADTOO.COM
"Choices is a very intense book. It deals with issues that few Christian books dare to explore. The story is graphic and hard hitting. The writing is excellent, and sheds light on a reality that I was not very familiar with. I was rooting for all the girls and shed quite a few tears as I read about the tough choices they made. Issues such as rape, domestic abuse, premarital sex, teen pregnancy, abstinence, and death are all addressed.
What is special about this book is that all these situations are presented in such a manner to lead the reader to Christ. We all have choices to make in how we lead our life, it's up to us to make the choice that honors God. There is a clear presentation of salvation and the author invites all readers to accept Jesus as their personal Savior."

Just the other day I read Kendra by Coe Booth. This book taught me something I didn't know about the choices some young people are making when it comes to sex. As I read this painfully honest story, I was reminded of how my novel doesn't even touch o...

I was in Atlanta for the first time this past weekend. I've heard a lot about how nice it is there, how there's plenty to do, but that wasn't my reason for going. I have been feeling pretty strongly about not taking things for granted ever since Augu...

An expression of love between a man and a woman who are married, an act that helps them to develop intimacy with one another - this is why God created sex. It's called "making love" and that is nothing to be ashamed of. But through the years mankind ...

I cater to my original title but the publisher thought I could gain the urban audience in addition to the conservative group if the word "deceit" was included in the title. The editor said it was more intriguing. But I'm still trying to convince her.
I'm happy to hear that Choices is a trilogy and will be out next year. Did you know that editor, Selena James, with Kensington/Dafina Books is looking for teen novels? Google their site and click on "guidelines."

Hey Katrina-girl! Hope all is well with you. It's good to hear from you. Have you gotten that sequel teen novel out yet? I can't wait to read it. The teen group I introduced CHOICES to have added your book to their September list (I think it's September). They have a list of books for each month and decides which to choose. CHOICES would be a great selection.
As for me, I just received an offer for my adult Christian fiction title "Desires & Deceit" (formerly titled "Desires of the Heart"). It was picked up by Genesis Press. It will be out in late 2010. I thought that Urban Christian Fiction would've picked it up, but they said that it wasn't "urban" enough. In other words, the characters were too educated (I guess).
Hope you're still writing. There is this great blog that's called: blogginginblack.com. Check it out sometimes.
Keep the faith,
Beverly

Hi Katrina,
Thanks for your request for friendship. I was reading through your profile and I love the name Kapri. What a great name for not only a niece and a publishing company, but a great name for a character in a book someday. Have a blessed day in the Lord!
