tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World is a spin-off sequel to Tales of Symphonia in development for the Wii, known in Japan as Tales of Symphonia: Knight of Ratatosk (???? ?? ?????? -????????- , Teiruzu obu Shinfonia-Ratatosuku no Kishi-?). It will be released in Japan April 24th 2008.[citation needed] The theme song is Three-legged race (????, Nininsankyaku?) by misono.[2] According to Shonen Jump, it will be a Wii exclusive. Nintendo Power recently revealed that this game will receive a release in North America. Nintendo Power also revealed that the Designer is Daigo Okumura.[3] The Official Nintendo Magazine has also mentioned something about a possible release in Europe. According to IGN, the North American release of the game is currently planned for the Fall 2008
Long ago, Sylvarant and Tethe'alla were united as a single world that drew strength from the Giant Kharlan Tree. Divine intervention tore them apart, however, and the Tree withered and died. It was eventually left to a boy named Lloyd to restore the world to its true form. At his journey's end, a new Tree was planted to replace the Giant Kharlan Tree and to hold the two worlds together. This is the story of the Journey of Regeneration.
United once more, the world is now entering a new era. However, its people are still faced with many problems. After the lands became one, maps were rendered useless and the climate went through many vast changes: desert towns became frozen wastelands and lakes dried up into valleys. All of this stems from an overlooked factor in the unification of the worlds: the spirit of the old Kharlan Tree, Ratatosk, still exists somewhere, and its slumber has sent the world into chaos.[1]
However, Ratatosk isn't the only problem: tensions are escalating between the people of the two worlds. The citizens of Tethe'alla look down upon the citizens of Sylvarant due to their inferior technology, and the citizens of Sylvarant fear the citizens of Tethe'alla for their power. Two years have passed since the worlds were first merged, and the people of Sylvarant have created an army, known as the Vanguard, with which to rise against the Church of Martel and the people of Tethe'alla.
Story
One day, the Church of Martel goes to war with the Vanguard, and Sylvarant's city of Palmacosta is caught in the crossfire. Countless innocent lives are lost and Palmacosta is consumed in a terrible fire. This event comes to be known as the "Purge of Blood", a massacre allegedly led by Lloyd Irving of the Church of Martel.
Setting
Dawn of the New World takes place two years after the events of Tales of Symphonia.[6] The protagonist is named Emil, and nearly all of the main characters from the original Symphonia will return:[6] only Kratos, who will act as the game's narrator, will not return in a playable capacity.[7] How all of the returning characters will interact with the new characters is not entirely known at this point in time. Trailers for the game, however, have depicted Lloyd in an antagonistic light: he fights Emil and Marta. Whether this means Lloyd is a primary antagonist, or merely a temporary enemy, like Kratos was, is uncertain. In addition, screenshots depicting Zelos have been released, implying that the canonical ending of Tales of Symphonia had Zelos live, rather than die. The same voice actors who voiced the main characters from the first game will return for this game (in the Japanese version; the status of the North American voice actors is currently unknown).
It is suggested by the Japanese title that the game will relate to the character Ratatosk from Norse mythology, who is a talking squirrel that lived on the World Tree, Yggdrasil. Tales of Symphonia features a giant life-giving tree that functions similarly to the Yggdrasil of myths. This tree also exists in Tales of Phantasia, which Tales of Symphonia is a distant prequel to. In Tales of Phantasia it is called Yggdrasill, supposedly after Tales of Symphonia's main villain.

Gameplay
The game uses a variation of Tales of the Abyss' Flex Range Linear Motion Battle System[8] that incorporates some elements of Tales of Destiny's Aerial Linear Motion Battle System: this creates a battle experience comparable to Tales of Innocence's Dimension Stride Linear Motion Battle System. This system, which will support up to four players,[1] will allow the player to free-run during battle and to perform both attacks and extensive combos in the air. Unison Attacks are back as well; a new feature (known as "Field Element Attributes") will play a role in battles. Furthermore, the player will be able to capture, breed, and level up monsters to fight alongside Emil in battle.[6]
The Field Map won't be returning in this game. Instead, a point-and-click system using the Wii Remote will be used to navigate the world. The map that displays the world itself will be the same as the Field Map in Tales of Phantasia, except that the towns will still use their Tales of Symphonia names.

It is soon revealed that he was summoned by Tenebrae, whose voice he had heard earlier. He makes a deal with Tenebrae and agrees to become a Knight of Ratatosk, thus enabling him to use Ratatosk's power during battle. Whenever he fights his eyes turn red and his personality changes into that of a cruel fighter, causing some to see him as a monster.[9]

E3 2008: Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World Impressions
The sun rises on this new role-playing game for the Wii.

A visit to Namco Bandai at E3 would not be complete without some Tales action, so we grabbed a demo of Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World on the Nintendo Wii. While this new role-playing excursion takes place in the same universe as the previous Symphonia, it's being billed as an offshoot rather than a full-on sequel. This enables some gameplay experiments in the form of monster capture and training, while the rest of the experience still hews close to the traditional Tales formula.
The hero in matters this time around is Emil, a young swordsman with a demeanor that doesn't befit top billing in a fantastical adventure; he's shy and timid, hesitant to commit to action. The trick is that when he's around Marta--a young girl with a jewel that allows her to relate to monsters somehow--he tends to flip out. When he's having one of his episodes, his whole manner changes. His eyes change color, his voice deepens, he grows a spine, and no one's quite sure why it happens. Emil's got quite the set of issues, at least some of which he blames on Lloyd Irving, the protagonist of the original Symphonia.
Lloyd and his friends will figure fully in Dawn of the New World, and many of your old favorites will join you again to be members of your party (during the demo we bumped into Genis and Raine). The real-time combat is tried and true Tales, with your characters freely roaming the battlefield and inflicting various special abilities called "artes" on your foes. Emil himself fancies a lot of midair artes, sweeping enemies into the air and then knocking them around. One of the twists in this particular game is that the artes characters use correspond to certain elements, and battlefields also are linked to elements. If for example you use a bunch of fire-attuned artes in a fire element area, it'll confer bonuses, one of which is an increased ability to win over monsters to your side.
During the demo we were shown an example of where monster recruitment comes in handy--a large plant creature was blocking the entrance of a dungeon and refused to move. As it turns out, he enjoys a particular type of monster as a delicious snack. When the proper monster was brought back, it was able to be used as bait to draw the creature out of position.
But mainly you'll be recruiting monsters as powerful allies to fight alongside you. You can try to gather them up during battle, and if you've manipulated the elements properly you'll have a much better shot. There are around 220 different types of critters you can win over to your side, and some of those can only be "evolved" all Darwin-style from other monsters in the world. For instance, dog monsters can evolve into wolf monsters, wyverns can evolve into dragon monsters, and so on. You'll be able to adapt them by cooking different foods to feed them or strengthening their powers by using other monsters. One thing you can't do with your monstrous recruits is control them during the games co-op mode, though; only human characters are eligible for that.
Dawn of the New World is shaping up as a nice role-playing game for those of us who still hold a lot of affection for the Symphonia characters and world. We're anticipating this Wii adventure in fall 2008, so keep watching this gamespace for the latest news.
