About Give Readers Digest

Readers Digest has created an amazing new contest for people to go onto their website and submit stories of the "True Spirit of Christmas."

The most intriguing story will win you $1000 and a charity of your choice $1000!!

Here's an example story:

"This Christmas my husband and I have decided to ask our neighbors not to buy our kids any presents. We have talked it through with the girls and explained that there are kids all over the world who don't get anything for Christmas. Instead we have asked either for a small donation or gifts that we can pack into a shoebox to send overseas as part of the Samaritan's Purse Christmas shoebox program.

The girls are really excited to box and wrap these gifts for other kids and have had fun participating in buying 'box fillers' and wrapping and decorating the boxes. It's been a great experience for our family and we are hoping to involve other families on our street next year."

- Amy S - Tennessee

It's a really great opportunity, and I think it takes us back to the True Spirit of Christmas.

OVERHEARD AT THE QCCWC: (or maybe not?)

Well, Brett is good, but it's such a common name. How about trying Rhett, Margaret?"

Well, Melville, "Big Willie" certainly conveys the idea of size, but how about using the deck hand's name "Moby Dick" for the whale and renaming your narrator "Ishmael"?

I'm not sure children will relate to your title. "The Scarlet Equestrian Cape" seems a little pretentious for kids. Maybe something simpler like "Little Red Riding Hood" would work.

"90 Minutes in Heaven"?I think it's been done.

"Tomorrow is Another Day" is just a bit to cliché-ish, Margaret. How about something with a little more punch, maybe a line from a old poem, say "Gone with the Wind."

"The Shack!"? How about dropping the exclamation point?

I think your DaVinci needs some decoding.

What we really need is a good Amish vampire romance/adventure novel set on a planet far, far away.

Looking for some great writing advice?
