Christians often mistakenly think that the spiritual side of Celtic culture is necessarily pagan. On the contrary, we have found that there is actually a rich heritage of faith and a host of godly examples to encourage us in our modern walk with Christ.
Christianity may have come to Britain as early as ad37. The indigenous British Church which sent Patrick to Ireland in 432 had already been established so long that, by Patrick's account, they had sunk into a traditionalism that maintained a form of godliness but denied its power. When Patrick went to Ireland, the Gaels were so ready for the Truth of the Gospel that Ireland maintains a unique place in Church history: not a drop of martyr's blood was spilt during the conversion process. The Church that developed in Ireland followed the tribal model of the Celtic culture around it, rather than the imperial model of Roman and Byzantine culture. And after the "barbarians" had sacked Rome, desicrated churches, and burned countless reams of priceless scrolls, Bibles, and other books, it was the Irish saints that returned Christianity and education to the continent.
This is the heritage we are learning about. Come join us in the exploration!
