I love to hit upon lesser known artists, so the music community here at ShoutLife is a goldmine for me. I like styles from bluegrass to show tunes, as long the quality is good.

Fiction: I'm just finishing Michael Golden's Veil trilogy. Excellent fantasy. The best novel I've read lately is Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora - just fantastic! Also like Gregory Maguire, Joe Clifford Faust, Orson Scott Card, Neil Gaiman (except American Gods - gratuitously sexual, a real disappointment), Chris Well, Caroline Stevermer, Phil Callaway, Adrian Plass
Study: John Piper, RC Sproul, lately John Eldredge

Almost never watch current TV. Like old Britcoms, sketch comedy, PBS. Even today's commercials offend me for my kids' sake, I'm looking into Sky Angel for family viewing. Movies: Superhero flicks, heroic action, comedies, independent films. I loved Stardust.

Megazeen Convention Special 2005 (2005)
As illustrator with writer Ben Avery on Jerry & Quarter in "Lost and Found" in the Megazeen 2005 Convention Special: The Book of Evil. Total fun to work with noted writer Ben Avery for the Megazeen's Book of Evil. Our three-pager told the Seinfeldesque tale of discovering evil quite by accident, and the consequence of taking it lightly.

On the Brink (1997)
On the Brink is an infotainment comic strip developed for an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and funded by Recycle Ohio. Keeping the themes of recycling, litter prevention, and conservation educational yet humorous was a challenge to research and write. It was published weekly in a regional newspaper. The project lasted a year.

I'm an artist. I've tried hard to be other things and managed to be very good at them, but my heart is in the arts, and I can't be anything else. I am foremost a child of God, and then an artist, a husband, a father, a teacher, a renaissance man. But all these other things in light of the first.
I write, I draw, I paint, I act, I make music, I sculpt, I seek joy. God is good, His gifts are abundant, His grace is sufficient. Partnered to Sheri for 25 years, papa to Bethannie (9) and Carrie (7). Master to an ungrateful mongrel: Zowie the Great Lummox, of the deceptively small puppy paws.
Please visit Doug's Imagination, which is a work in progress, just like all the rest of my life.
A note about the Guestbook graphics: You know I love the glamour stuff, but out here in Dairy Farm, Ohio, dial-up is still our only internet option. Those lovely pictures just take forever to load! So keep posting them, but please don't mind if I delete the old ones. Love ya!

Wayfaring Stranger

Wayfaring Stranger has been one of my favorite songs since I was a little kid, and more than ever, that's how I feel. Territory in this world that used to feel so comfortable becomes ever less familiar. It's kind of like going back to visit a house...

I used to be one of those people who needed to learn to say "no." I often ended up completely overwhelmed and burned out because I was so dependable, faithful, and responsible, and an utter door mat. I didn't know how to tell someone that their reque...

Boy, I hate my morning commute to work. It's not that long a drive and I do use the time to listen to some good radio and pray, but I just never enjoyed competing for road space with fellow motorists. Especially when so many of them aren't concerned ...
