Denise Dovel: Praying For You
Posted by Kevan Breitinger
Indie artist Denise Dovel has a heart to minister to the hurting, and it comes across strongly in the compassionate vocals of "Praying For You."
Denise wrote eleven of the album's thirteen tracks, and that empathetic heart shows up through all thirteen. "Praying For You" is a very topical project, her wise lyrics quietly teaching important truths through her gentle piano-driven songs. Opener "Finally Free" brings forth a godly perspective ("Finally free from me") from among its percolating keyboards. The passionate standout track "Your Mercy" covers the way the Lord pursues us, and the riches of His mercy. The title track discusses the power of intercessory prayer. One of the most interesting tracks, "Why Should I Pray?" gives a firm declaration of the mighty power of prayer. Dovel addresses the dichotomy of flesh and spirit so common to us all in "Do the Things," an honest commentary on the struggles of Romans 7.
Her songwriting is timely as well, offering the moving "He Loves His Country," a lovely ballad of appreciation for the sacrifices of our soldiers. The strongest track on "Praying For You" is closer "I Need You Every Day," a rousing rocker, aided beautifully by the background vocals of Olivia Dunkle. This last track is where Dovel really cuts loose, and I wish she hadn't waited. She has some hidden rocker chops under all of that gentleness, and I enjoyed the little bit revealed on "Praying For You." All in all, Denise Dovel brings us a worthy ministry-driven offering that many will enjoy.
A vivacious singer/songwriter with a passion for God and people, Denise shares songs from the heart, inspired through the trials and various stages of life. Her album, "Praying For You" has different genres interwoven beautifully, from soulful pop to worshipful ballads, to a little country, and covering topics like Romans 6, prayer, and patriotism. Recorded in Nashville by Shay Watson and Joe Mazza and contains songs co-written by Darwin Moody (president of Embassy Music) and Shay Watson. A homeschooling mother of 5, her songs relate to the listener in a tangible way.
