've always been a romantic who has had the good fortune to live in romantic places. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii with its enormous diversity of culture filled me with stories from around the world and nurtured my love of history and the people who came before us. From there, I moved to Aspen, Colorado which is completely unique and different from almost any place on earth. Again, I experienced a world of glamour, excitement, and tragedy. Through it all, I was sustained by my faith.
What inspires me to write? God inspires me to write. Life inspires me to write. Injustice inspire me to write. The desire to inspire others and to cause people to think inspires me to write.
What is my goal in writing? If anyone finds enjoyment in what I write, or finds something profound that will change or better their life, or finds comfort, inspiration, or a kernal of knowledge that affects their thinking and/or world of feelings, then I have done what I was supposed to do.
Now, at a time when most people are heading for retirement, I have finally jump-started my writing career. Thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ, I became part of the 1.1% of all screenwriters that ever get a movie made. The book, by the same name, was based on the movie, "September Dawn."

In a beautiful, pristine valley called Mountain Meadows, surrounded by an atmosphere of fear and hatred, Jonathan, tormented by the execution of his beautiful mother by a lecherous apostle, falls in love with beautiful, spirited Emily. Ordered to spy on the wagon train by his father, Jonathan tames a wild, magnificent black stallion and wins the heart of the girl who has captured his.
The Mountain Meadow massacre was an act so atrocious it was kept shrouded in secrecy for over a hundred years. Driven by Brigham Young's chilling Blood Atonement sermons documented in the Mormon Church archives, Mormons commit polygamy, murder, and castration in the name of God. But unforgiveness and revenge cannot stop a love so great, it refused to die, or muzzle a story so amazing, it struggled to be told.
In the end, Jonathan is forced to choose between his brother, his family, and his faith, or Emily amidst the ashes of the Mountain Meadow Massacre.

I was born with a dream. I wanted to write. It took me a long time to fulfill my dream but with God's help and persistence anything is possible. That mantra defines my life. No matter how difficult life becomes, no matter how many curve balls life throws your way, never give up.
A prolific producer of many major motion pictures once told me that the story of how my first screenplay, September Dawn became a movie was a miracle. It began when I brought the first draft of September Dawn to my very dear friend, Christopher Cain of Young Guns fame.
September Dawn is based on a real life event, the Mountain Meadow Massacre, the first act of religious terrorism in the United States that occurred on September 11, 1857. However, the central theme of the book and the movie is forgiveness wrapped around a beautiful Romeo and Juliet-type love story.
I found the nature of terrorism especially intriguing and relevant today. Creating likeable characters that take part in unimaginably atrocious acts is a chilling reminder that terrorists can be anyone who chooses to blindly follow fanatical, charismatic leaders. I believe we should examine the leaders we follow that we might not be misled.
Our fight is not against certain religions or "flesh and blood," as the Bible says, but "against principalities and powers of darkness" which are prejudice, hate, ignorance, and fear perpetuated by leaders who history will surely judge by their deeds.
I am grateful that Christopher Cain took the time to read an unschooled attempt at screenwriting and believed in the project enough to turn it into a stirring, evocative movie that will force people to think about the nature of terrorism.
Most of all, I am grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ who took one of the "foolish things of the world to confound the wise." In a world where only 1.1% of all screenwriters ever get a movie made, Jesus gave me a miracle. He turned me into a screenwriter and fulfilled a lifelong dream of being an author. Thank you, Jesus. What He did for me, He can and will do for you, if you never give up and simply believe.
