History:
Carey has been involved with music since the age of 8. She began playing the viola in elementary school and started playing the bassoon (a double reed instrument) at age 12. Carey continued to play the bassoon in her high school band and won many state and regional awards for her solos and ensembles. She was appointed "Best Woodwind Musician" for 3 consecutive years, selected for the "Band Director's Award" for 2 consecutive years and received the prestigious John Philip Sousa Award in the 11th grade. The John Philip Sousa Award is an optional award a high school band director may award to one of his students. It is restricted to one per school per year. The award recognizes musicianship, dependability, loyalty and cooperation. During marching band season, Carey performed with the percussion section on snare, quince and base drum. Her high school band took high marks at every competition. Carey dreamed of becoming a performing musician with the New York Philharmonic and wanted to study music at the Juilliard School.
Her senior year of high school, Carey's father was transferred out of state and the Cooper family was uprooted from their small town in Alma, AR to the big city of metro Washington DC (Fairfax, VA). Carey was intimidated by the new talent and competition on the East Coast. Though placing as first chair in her new high school band, she digressed from her musical studies. She had lost her chance for the college scholarships that were awarded her in Arkansas due to the moving (residential status) and she knew she was borrowing a school instrument that would cost her parents thousands of dollars to purchase! The Coopers were a family of 6 kids and finances were always tight.
After high school graduation, Carey began working and saving money to get into the local college. She studied Small Business Management and bought her first electric keyboard. Carey started writing poems and putting music to her words. Gaining feedback from friends and family, Carey began crafting her talents. She is self-taught on the keyboard and plays by ear. Since then, she has played her music for a prison outreach program, church specials, festivals, youth outreach programs, Bible study groups and is currently involved with the Central Indiana Songwriter's Association where she performs at coffee houses with other songwriters.
Carey is currently working towards putting together a group of local musicians who enjoy playing jazz fusion that is salted with the Christian Faith! Specifically, Carey would like to find an upright base player and a few woodwind and brass musicians!
More About Carey:
In 1999, I fell deeply in love with a great guy who loves me (see Marc Sherman's page below). I have 2 teenagers (from a first marriage) that I cherish and adore. I own 2 dogs that keep life interesting. I am sometimes quirky and have dry humor. I am compassionate and care deeply for others (very empathetic). I work full-time as a Manager/Graphic Designer for a magazine publishing company. I sing and write music almost nightly; it is my time to be intimate with my savior! I love to watch "Home and Garden" television while relaxing at home. I don't understand why everyone must have granite countertops but I am not discouraged with laminate (bleach takes the stains out). I also enjoy reading "Coastal Living" magazine - though I live smack dab in the middle of the Midwest! I am a sucker for the sunshine and often long for the coast with all its sand & surf! However, nothing beats the Autumn season in the Midwest! I love the smell of leaves falling from trees, wood burning in the fireplace, winter snow-flakes finding graceful landings in my yard and the comfort I get from my old, feather-down blanket. I love classic movies, Katherine Hepburn and hot tea with a little peppermint! I enjoy cooking and inventing spicy recipes! Cayenne pepper is my best friend in the kitchen! Writing music is like worship and can be a wonderful past-time for me. I have written hundreds of songs and have them stashed in notebooks and on cassette tapes and mp3 files all around my home! I love being a part of the family of God! I had a rough road with a previous broken marriage, losing 2 babies in miscarriage and being a single mom for several years. I had to get tough and go back to school to get away from poverty. I've fought hard to be able to walk with my head high. The strength I've had is a direct result of Christ working in me for His glory!
