Living and working at a residential ministry (ranch) for at-risk youth . . . and seeing God's amazing work in their lives. (Really, in my life too!)

Learning new things; talking about what's happening in the world and especially about how Jesus can be a part of our personal world; people and their stories; talking with teens about the tough stuff of life; taking a break and going for walks with family and friends; seeing a new movie, play, or going to a concert . . . just living life.

Worship music that I can sing at the top of my lungs when I'm alone in the house. Others . . . Nicole Nordeman; some Shawn McDonald; Casting Crowns; Celine Dion; Sarah Groves, Brook Fraser, and others.

Too many to mention. How 'bout current reads:
The Lost Art of Listening (Michael Nichols, PhD); The Plan (Laurie Beth Jones); A Guide to Prayer for All Who Seek God; Coaching for Christian Leaders (Linda Miller, Chad Hall) . . . of course, almost goes with saying, the Bible;
current fiction: Tuesday Night at the Blue Moon, by Debbie Fuller Thomas, and Daisy Chain, by Mary DeMuth

News and shows that talk about hot topics and issues. (What do you expect? I'm a non-fiction author!) NCIS is a current favorite
Finding Nemo (there's a story behind this one being a fav); Paycheck; Stranger Than Fiction; While You Were Sleeping; Freedom Writers; Pride and Prejudice . . . basically clean chick or humor flicks, mystery, suspense (NO horror!)

To the core
You want to know what grips my heart to the very core? Watching teens and young adults succeed in the face of all they have thrown at them these days. I have a passion to do my small part in the battle for their hearts and lives. How did I get here? I was once a teen who wrestled with the aftermath of my parents' divorce and moved to a new state where I discovered peer pressure and choices I (naively) never knew existed. I struggled. I made mistakes. Thankfully, while in high school, someone told me I could find answers and strength through a relationship with Christ. That's another story for another time, but I did begin to learn what it meant to trust God through all kinds of crazy situations. By the time I was twenty, I began working with youth and I haven't stopped. I'm now married and have been living and working with my husband at a ranch for at-risk youth for the last twenty-something years. We have two children, ages 21 and 24, who have fared pretty well facing today's cultural pressures. When people try to credit us as parents, I say, "only by the grace of God." And I fully believe that. We can't do any of this without him. -Jan Jan's blog on encouraging and helping the teens and young adults in our lives:Type"www" dot and then "jan" and then "kern" (Hopefully this is only temporary, but a bug seems to be preventing my name from being used as a link.) Teens need hope. Maybe we can be that hope builder.
But it takes deep commitment, starting with what we do to make sure we have the hope to give, the hope they need most.

Hey my friend
I'm home from the hospital Praise the Lord! Their still not sure what caused all this, but my lungs are much clearer and I can breath thank the Lord! I go back to the doctor Thursday, but I'm believing our Doctor is taking care of me. We serve a Mighty God and I thank you for talking to Him about me,and bless your hearts for praying down strengh for Stella she never wavered through it all thank you so much!!! But the most important thing is, just listen to this oh Hallelujah Bless His Name they will never stop His plan! With me being home yesterday God allowed me to cross pathes with this lady she's lost and knows she needs Christ. We talked briefly and she was crying under deep conviction and said she had to go.But before she left I ask her to visit us here at shoutlife. Well I as we all have felt, I thought we would never hear from her. Guess what not only did she visit she opened her on page! Her name is Michelle I added her to my top 25 list please go by pray and encourage her! Let her know what we are all about Amen! Sorry such a long letter and I cant type it has took me about an hour to write this, but oh Hallelujah one more soul for Him Amen!
God Bless You

Jan,
May God's awesome presence surround you, His love overwhelm you, His peace fill you to the full, and His mercy constantly fall upon you. May you find His grace sufficient for your every need. Happy Easter!
Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids Him rise, Alleluia!
Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia! -Charles Wesley

Happy Easter Poem
I'm so thankful that its true
That he rose for me and you
That our Father raised him up
And he didn't refuse the cup
Only he could pay that price
He was our perfect sacrifice
He has risen just as he said
He's alive, no longer dead
Tears of joy I now can cry
And Jesus Christs the reason why
Because he died and rose for me
I'll now live eternally
Ask him in your heart today
He is the life the truth the way
